Can a bar legally hold your ID if you are asked to leave?

Some friends and I went to a bar this past weekend to celebrate one of their birthdays. Not even 30 minutes after arriving, one of the bouncers accused my friend of attempting to underage drink. This did not happen and was not even thought about! The bouncer asked all of us to leave and told us that the bar was going to keep our IDs. We did not do anything wrong, but they would not give us our IDs back. I understand that if we were intoxicated they could have handed them over to the authorities, but they did not do this because we were not intoxicated. I went back to pick up my ID and they told me they lost it! I just want to know if a bar can legally hold your ID for no reason?
