How do Fraternities get their Greek names? Do they chose any 3 letters as long as they are not already taken?

Is there a method to this? Do certain letters represent certain things? Do fraternites of different nationalities use the same letters in their names? Someone told me that most Latino fraternities use Lambda? Is this true?
