UK fuel price rises and taxation?

We are in the near-uniformity of the EU. Ignore percentages - petrol and diesel cost as much in the UK, or a bit less now, than the fuels in the rest of Europe. I used to save a lot of money by arriving in Calais with an empty tank. Now I make the saving by filling up in Dover.
